This a website about photography, optics, and especially photographic optics. Its main purpose is to identify lens imperfections and otherwise explain optical phenomena observed in photographic images. It started in the late nineties when I wondered about the origin of certain artifacts observed in my photographs. I am not professionally involved in photography, optics or web design - in daily life I work as an underwater acoustician. This website is just a hobby project with new material appearing at an irregular and slow rate.
A new layout since November 2006. There is a new page on spurious resolution and there are new examples on the chromatic aberrations page. In the pipeline there is a page on the center of perspective of a compound lens.
The text editor creation vanwalree.com was tested with recent versions of Firefox, Opera, and Internet Explorer. The pages look more or less the same. Dated browsers will not display the pages as they are intended. However, the site is hopefully functional in that you can access all material.
Remarks or questions can be addressed to the e-mail address mentioned below. Perhaps your question is already answered by the faq. The probability of your e-mail being read increases if you choose a clear subject. "Hi!", "Hello!" or "Thanks!", for example, are poor choices as spam and manual filters are uncompromising.
